When you download your data from Instagram or Facebook, a “.zip” file is what you receive — a compressed archive of every word you’ve ever typed, every photo you’ve uploaded, and every choice you’ve made on the platform. A nice, tidy digital package that sums up who you are.
you.zip (2024) is an animated video artwork that invites reflection on modern existence as mapped by data points. Accompanied by synthetic and organic sounds, and featuring movements from real motion capture, the figure gradually reduces to lines and points. Is our online life—posts, curated images, and shared memes—just a floating digital version of ourselves, or is there something beyond this observable data that resists being compressed into files and folders?
